Климактерический период — естественный биологический период перехода от репродуктивного периода жизни женщины к старости, который характеризуется постепенным угасанием функции яичников, снижением уровня эстрогенов, прекращением менструальной и репродуктивной функции. Средний возраст наступления менопаузы для женщин Европейского региона и РФ составляет 50–51 год. При этом в условии дефицита эстрогенов женщины живут прак-течение длительного времени СД 2 типа может быть не диагностирован, предполагается, что его фактическая распространенность в 2–3 раза выше регистрируемой. Следует отметить, что женщины старше45 лет болеют СД в 2 раза чаще мужчин [9]. Таким образом, СД можно назвать эпидемией XX века.
